Origin & Habitat

Illex squid is predominantly found in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean, especially off the coasts of Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil. It inhabits continental shelf and slope waters, typically ranging from shallow coastal zones to depths of 200 meters. This species is highly migratory, following seasonal patterns tied to spawning and feeding.

Illex squid plays a crucial ecological role in marine food webs, serving as prey for larger fish, marine mammals, and seabirds, while also being a major target species for commercial fisheries.

Physical Characteristics & Behavior

Illex squid has a streamlined body with a mantle length usually ranging between 15 to 30 cm, though individuals can grow larger. It features short fins and a reddish to brown coloration that helps camouflage in its pelagic environment. Known for its rapid swimming ability and agility, Illex squid is an active predator feeding on smaller fish and crustaceans.

This squid is also prized for its fast growth rate and short lifespan, which make it a sustainable choice for fisheries when managed properly.

Fishing & Processing

Illex squid is mainly caught using trawl nets and jigging methods during peak migration seasons. Once harvested, the squid is immediately processed to maintain quality, including gutting, cleaning, and freezing. The product is often sold frozen, either whole or as cleaned tubes and tentacles, catering to diverse market demands.
